Step 3: Bringing Colour to the Ceiling – Painting Essentials and Techniques
Before you begin painting, gather your essential tools for this stage: a roller and tray, your chosen paints (starting with ceiling emulsion), a 2-3 inch paintbrush, a roller extension handle, a small stepladder or stable step-up box, and importantly, eye protection goggles.
We’ll start with the ceiling. Take your ceiling emulsion and stir it thoroughly to ensure a consistent colour and texture. The first crucial step is to “cut in” all the edges where the ceiling meets the walls and around any light fittings. Using your paintbrush, carefully apply a band of paint approximately 4 inches wide onto the ceiling and extend it about ¼ inch down onto the adjacent walls. This creates a neat border and makes rolling the main area easier.
Once the cutting in is complete, it’s time to load your roller. Pour a generous amount of ceiling emulsion into your roller tray. Attach the extension pole to your roller handle for easier reach. When loading the roller sleeve, avoid simply dragging it through the paint. Instead, roll it along the tray and into the paint, ensuring even saturation across the entire width of the roller. This technique prevents paint buildup on one side and promotes consistent coverage.
With your roller well-loaded but not dripping, begin painting at one end of the room. It can sometimes be tricky to see which areas you’ve already covered, so here’s a pro tip: mentally divide the ceiling into manageable blocks, roughly 4-5 feet square, and work your way across the room section by section. As you paint each block, always “lay off” the paint towards the previously painted area. Laying off involves gently rolling over the freshly painted surface to eliminate any roller marks and ensure a smooth, uniform finish.
Once the entire ceiling has been painted, step back and assess if a second coat is needed for optimal coverage. If so, repeat the entire cutting-in and rolling process in the same order. With your ceiling now complete, you’re ready to move on to painting the walls.
