Basic essentials for a good finish on the redecoration of a room (Part2)

Step 2: Laying the Groundwork for a Smooth Finish – Preparing Surfaces

With your room safely protected, it’s time to turn our attention to the surfaces themselves. Proper preparation of the walls, ceiling, and woodwork is paramount for a flawless and long-lasting paint job. Before you begin, ensure you have the essential tools at hand: medium-coarse sandpaper, a filling knife, masking tape or decorator’s tape (blue is a popular choice), screwdrivers, filler (ready-mixed or powder), and a dusting brush.

Begin by removing any obstructions from the walls, such as screws and picture hangers. Now, address any imperfections. Using your filling knife, apply filler to all holes and cracks. If you’ve opted for powder-based filler, mix it to a smooth, slightly loose consistency for easier application, especially into finer cracks. Crucially, before applying any filler, ensure the areas are completely free of loose dust and debris. This will guarantee proper adhesion and a strong repair.

While the filler dries (typically around an hour), make the most of this downtime by thoroughly dusting the entire room. Use your dusting brush to remove any loose particles from the walls, ceilings, and all woodwork. A clean surface is vital for paint to adhere correctly.

Once the dusting is complete, turn your attention to the woodwork. Gently sand down the skirting boards, door frames, window sills, and the door using your sandpaper. This creates a slightly keyed surface, allowing the paint to grip better.

By now, the filler you applied earlier should be dry and ready for sanding. Lightly sand the filled areas until they are smooth and flush with the surrounding surface. Give the room one final sweep with your dusting brush to remove any sanding residue.

You’re now in the final stages of preparation! It’s time to protect your fixtures. Carefully mask off all electrical sockets and light switches. While a good quality masking tape will suffice, many professionals prefer blue decorator’s tape for its clean removal.

As a seasoned painter, I prefer the crisp lines achieved by “cutting in” paint along skirting boards and door frames without masking. However, if you’re newer to painting, masking these areas is highly recommended. It will provide a clean edge and prevent accidental paint marks.

With all these preparation steps complete, you’ve laid a solid foundation and are finally ready to start painting!
