Investing in Quality: The Essential Tools for a Professional Painting Finish
Achieving a truly professional and long-lasting finish hinges on using the right tools, and quality matters. While budget options might seem appealing initially, they often wear out prematurely, compromising the final result. Inexpensive brushes, in particular, tend to shed bristles, which will be visible in your paintwork. Similarly, cheap rollers can leave an unsightly “orange peel” texture on your walls.
For a relatively small additional investment, you can purchase good quality brushes and rollers that, if cleaned and cared for properly after each use, will last for numerous painting projects. This ultimately saves you money in the long run.
The world of paintbrushes is diverse, with each type designed for a specific task. For crisp, clean lines when “cutting in,” angled brushes are my go-to. Sash brushes are ideal for the detailed work on window frames. And for larger areas like doors, I rely on high-quality professional brushes ranging from 1 to 3 inches. You can find all these brush types at most major DIY stores and specialist trade decorating centres.
The same principle applies to sandpaper and masking tape. While numerous brands and qualities are available, spending a little extra on superior products makes a significant difference. Cheap sandpaper can disintegrate within minutes, requiring frequent replacements, and low-quality masking tape often fails to prevent paint bleed, leading to messy edges. My personal preference is blue decorator’s tape for its clean removal and excellent paint barrier, paired with durable aluminium oxide sandpaper for efficient and effective surface preparation.
When it comes to paints and stains, the options are equally vast, ranging from traditional oil-based to modern acrylic and versatile emulsions. Each type has its specific applications and comes in a wide spectrum of qualities.
